Here is a fun project to start off the New Year. Find a spot somewhere in your home, inside or out, that gets a lot of sunlight. Choose some plants and vegetation, (just two or three is plenty) that create a sense of wellbeing in you. Think about how they look, smell, feel. Take a trip to a greenhouse and actually shop for your personal garden space. Think about the names of the plants. Do a little research on plants and choose a couple based on where they originate from. Someplace perhaps you might like to be or to go.
Take some time to choose what types of containers to put your plants in: every minute detail is important. This is not to redecorate your whole house. This is a small project: a “pocket garden”. You are creating a personal space for you to have your own time for reflection and meditation, where you can go to unwind. If anyone else in your household wishes to participate, they need to create their own pocket garden in a different spot. This one is all for you. It can even be private if you want.
If eating healthy is in the mix for your 2010 resolutions, perhaps growing a little bit of parsley or mint might be a good idea for your pocket garden. If you are particularly adept at growing things and are up to a challenge, bonsai trees are growing in popularity: perhaps you might try pruning your own. There are a million ways to do this. The most important thing is that your personal little garden space resonates with your soul. You feel a sense of peace when imagining and creating your pocket garden, when you tend to and care for it, and most importantly when you are still … there.
